:: The venues

The conference will be held at the University of Glasgow. Founded in 1451, Glasgow University is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world. The first teaching was done in Glasgow Cathedral, before gaining accommodation elsewhere in the city centre. The University moved to the Gilmorehill campus, its current location in the city’s bustling and easily accessible West End, in 1870. All scholarly sessions, plenary sessions, and coffee and lunch breaks will take place in one of two buildings located across the street from one another, within approximately five minutes walking distance from the nearest underground station.

:: Excursions

A variety of excursions are being planned to enable delegates to become familiar some of this heritage. Excursions and activities being arranged include a number of venues in Glasgow itself, for instance a visit to the new Transport Museum, which will be completed in spring 2011, or to the Hunterian Museum’s instruments collection. Further afield, there will be opportunities to visit the site of Robert Owen’s famous experiment in industrial and social engineering at New Lanark, and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Details on the events, dates and times, and associated costs will be available when registration goes live in approximately mid-February 2011.
