Dear ICOHTECians,
We have to announce very sad news: our Past President and Honorary Member Hans-Joachim Braun (Hamburg) has passed away.
He attended ICOHTEC symposia since the late 1970s, served as Secretary General of ICOHTEC for a long period, was a member of ICON’s Editorial Board, and was ICOHTEC President from 2005 to 2009.
To mention just two examples of why ICOHTEC would be a different society without him: he was involved in creating our peer-reviewed journal ICON and established ICOHTEC’s jazz band together with Susan Schmidt Horning, Anthony Stranges, and Jim Williams.
Our friend and colleague, a great researcher of military matters, was also passionate about music and football, especially the Barcelona sports club.
From 1982 to 2008, Braun held the Chair of Modern Social, Economic and Technological History at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg. He also conducted research and taught at Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was a visiting scholar at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
