Abstract

The article provides a historical overview of the past 25 years, covering the origins and development of the Radiation Monitoring Laboratory at the State Institution “Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” in the broader context of radiation hygiene monitoring in Ukraine. It describes the Laboratory’s activities, including monitoring radioactivity in water, food, plants, soil, and raw materials. Its activities also encompass the study of radioactive contamination from nuclear power plants (NPPs) and other technologies, accidental releases from the Chornobyl NPP, and assessments of natural radioactivity. The article focuses on assessing environmental radioactivity, its spatial distribution, and radiation doses, with the aim of reducing exposure wherever possible. The development and application of various methods in the Laboratory’s daily work are also discussed, highlighting their significance and compliance with current international standards. International connections, mutual influences, and collaborative activities within the global research community are considered as well.
