HSE St Petersburg invites domestic and international applicants to its new two-year, English-language MA ‘Global and Regional History’. Explore the vibrant field of global history through a regional focus on Russian, former Soviet and Eurasian spaces, and through an interdisciplinary unity of history and anthropology.
The programme’s core seminars in theory and methodology are complemented by a broad array of regional courses from the history of St Petersburg to that of personality cults of the 20th century, the Cold War, imperial crossroads in northern Eurasia, the Caucasus, Central and Eastern Europe, the Arctic as well as on Russian/Soviet links with Arica, Asia, and Latin America. The programme draws on the proximity and wealth of archives and museum collections of St Petersburg and the diversity of its rich environs. Its students benefit from the ease of travel to Moscow, Finland, the Baltics and multiple regional locations within Russia. Full tuition-waiver for up to 20 places for international and domestic students.

In the time of Covid-19 we have mastered a rigorous online seminar format and amiable, and close cohort interaction, which we nonetheless will be happy turn back offline, circumstances permitting. Global history is one of the most exciting subjects to study at university today, and St Petersburg is unmatched as a place to study just as somewhere to be. We encourage strong applicants with undergraduate degrees in history and anthropology, Russian, East European and Eurasian studies as well as other backgrounds for whom history and related disciplines are new subjects. This MA is English-language taught yet including some Russian-language electives, options for Russian language training It provides skills for further academic study, including PhD, as well as non-academic careers.
