Summer School: “Linguistic Landscapes – Using Signs and Symbols to Translate Cities” (Venice, 29 June–3 July 2026)

Venice International University (Isola di San Servolo, Venice) is now accepting applications for the summer school “Linguistic Landscapes: Using Signs and Symbols to Translate Cities” (29 June–3 July 2026), an interdisciplinary course on how public signs and urban semiotics—from street names and billboards to images, graffiti, and other multimodal cues—shape the way we read and experience cities. The programme welcomes finalists (BA3), MA and PhD students from a wide range of fields (including linguistics, sociology, history, cultural studies, political studies, translation, and related disciplines). The call is open from 2 December 2025 to 31 March 2026, with only 20 places available; participants receive a certificate and 2 ECTS.

The German Mining Museum Bochum (Leibniz Research Museum for Georesources) is hiring a Research Curator for the DFG/AHRC-funded project “Toxic Heritage: Socio-natural Landscapes of Extraction and Pollution in the Harz and Cornwall.” Starting 1 June 2026 (or as soon as possible), this 24-month position (salary equivalent to 75% TV-L E13) combines independent research with the curatorial development of a major exhibition scheduled to open in Spring 2028, in close collaboration with partners at the Royal College of Art (London). The Dr. C. Louise Thijssen-Schoute Foundation is inviting applications for the Thijssen-Schoute Fellowship 2027, supporting research in the history of ideas with a particular focus on the seventeenth century and the Dutch Republic.
